Each of these books deals with some of the same themes as our Chelsea Reads Together book: The Blue Zones by Dan Buettner.  Now that Chelsea Reads Together is over for 2011, we leave you with these suggestions for further reading on the topics of wellness and longevity.

A Year in the Village of Eternity: The lifestyle of longevity in Campodimele, Italy by Tracey Lawson

Those of you who enjoyed the Sardinian chapter of The Blue Zones may really enjoy Tracey Lawson’s book. It traces a year in the life of villagers in tiny, remote Campodimele and explores the lifestyle and foodways of these people. Gorgeous photos of homemade lasagnes and ricotta tarts included!

The Longevity Project: surprising discoveries for health and long life from the landmark eight-decade study by Howard S. Friedman

Looking for a little more science? This study began in 1921 and has contiuned to research and analyze huge amounts of data on to discover who lives the longest and why. Friedman interprets this study in interesting, understandable language making it an accessible, fascinating read.

Thrive: finding happiness the Blue Zones way by Dan Buettner

Dan Buettner’s follow-up project to the Blue Zones is all about happiness! By examining the lifestyles and attitudes of the happiest people on Earth, Buettner draws correlates habits and behaviors that can contribute to your own well-being.

The Longevity Prescription: the 8 proven keys to a long, healthy life by Robert Butler

This book by the founder of the National Institute on Aging at the National Institute of Health uses his scientific background to create clear steps to help people stay alert, vital and healthy as they age.

A Long Bright Future: an action plan for a lifetime of happiness, health, and financial security by Laura Carstensen

Carstensen, an authority on longevity and aging, addresses not only the question of how to age well, but how to plan ahead to enjoy your extra decades in good health and good security. This book has a practical focus and attempts to address specific issues and day-to-day details.

You, Staying Young: the owner’s manual for extending your warranty by Mehmet Oz

Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen are Oprah’s medical gurus and this book in their Owner’s Manual series aims to make people aware of the biological aging process in order to understand and prevent physical and mental decline.

And then of course, there’s always The Blue Zones by Dan Buettner - the Chelsea Reads Together book selection for October 2011.
